Arrival flights are handled from the ground floor of the terminal, while all departures take place from the first level of the terminal’s building. In 2017, the passenger numbers were recorded at 9,264,611, and this number, similar to many other locations in the world, is only expected to increase as time moves further into the 21st century. Since 2007, the airport has handled over six million passengers per year, which determines it to be a destination of reasonable size. By 1999, the airport had reached the important milestone of five million passengers per year.

Air travel in Toulouse began in the very early 20th century, in the year 1913. The first ‘Aéropostale’ was established at Montaudran, and this area, along with Toulouse, was seen as the birthplace of international commercial aviation. Many experimental flights were made here, which included those for freight and post, as well as for passengers. A few years later the first aircraft stop-off point was established in Francazal, while it was decided that the Montaudran site would be uses as a factory aerodrome. The Francazal site was the air force base, and the Blagnac site was set apart for use as a civilian and industrial airport. Construction on the Blagnac site took off in 1939, with the building of a civilian hangar and two runways, each of 800 meters in length, and made from concrete slabs. Construction work picked up speed when the war began, as it was a much needed facility. Even though the airport was under precarious conditions, 9,000 passengers were recorded in 1945.

Toulouse Airport was only improved from this time onwards. One of the runways was lengthened to 2,500 meters, and the first terminal was opened in 1953. The airport then had a capacity for 400,000 passengers per annum. During the 1960’s, the freight terminal was built, the terminal was extended and both runways were lengthened and reinforced. In 1977 a million passengers passed through the airport, and in 1978, a new terminal building was opened, named as Blagnac 2. Expansion work was once again carried out in 1993, as the terminal capacities were saturated. In 2001, a new car park with 2,500 spaces was opened, and the ‘Hall A’ of the terminal was in use by June 2004. Since 2007, Blagnac has been managed by the private company of Aeroport Toulouse-Blagnac. Before this company, the site had been under the control of the Toulouse Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The company of Toulouse-Blagnac Airport S.A. is under an agreement with the French government to operate the site until 2046.

In terms of cargo traffic, Toulouse Airport handles around 30,000 tones per year, and their main cargo operators include CHRONOPOST, FedEx, DHL Express, TNT Express and TAT Express et UPS France. The airport’s general freight terminal is 8,000 square meters, and has the capacity to handle up to 50,000 tones of goods.
